Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu
LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos State, on Monday joined the Under2 Coalition, the world’s largest alliance of subnational governments committed to achieving net-zero emissions, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Climate Group during the London Climate Action Week 2026.
The agreement formally admits Lagos into the coalition, which comprises more than 180 states and regions representing over half of the global economy.
The move is expected to strengthen Lagos’ climate agenda, expand access to international partnerships and unlock new opportunities for climate financing and resilience-building initiatives.
Speaking at the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu said membership of the coalition reinforces the state’s commitment to sustainable development and climate resilience.
“Cities and regions are increasingly at the forefront of climate action. Joining the Under2 Coalition strengthens Lagos State’s commitment to building a resilient, low-carbon future while deepening collaboration with leading governments around the world,” he said.
The governor said Lagos intends to demonstrate that economic growth and climate action can coexist.
“As Africa’s economic and commercial hub, Lagos is determined to demonstrate that climate action and economic growth can go hand in hand, delivering tangible benefits for people, communities and future generations,” Sanwo-Olu added.
Lagos showcased several climate initiatives during the event, including its State-Determined Contributions framework and a portfolio of investment-ready climate projects.
Special Adviser on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Mrs. Titilayo Oshodi, said the coalition would strengthen knowledge exchange and international cooperation.
“Through our State-Determined Contributions framework and broader climate agenda, Lagos State is moving from ambition to implementation,” she said.
Officials of the Under2 Coalition described Lagos as one of Africa’s leading subnational governments.
“Lagos has a powerful story to tell,” representatives of the coalition said.
