LAGOS, Nigeria – Five people died on Friday night after a Dangote truck lost its brakes and rammed into a tricycle at Alapoka, along the Papalanto–Ilaro Road in Yewa South, Ogun State.
The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the crash on Saturday, describing it as a “fatal road traffic accident” that occurred around 8:25 p.m.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck driver did not realise he had hit the tricycle until its tyre crushed the smaller vehicle.
“The tricycle carried five passengers, and all died on the spot,” Akinbiyi said. “The truck lost its brakes and rammed into the tricycle before the driver noticed.”
Rescue operations led by TRACE Commander Adedayo Omonayajo and Salako Idowu faced resistance from angry residents until the Amotekun Corps intervened.
The victims’ bodies were later taken to a nearby morgue by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
TRACE has since urged motorists to ensure regular vehicle maintenance, especially brake checks, to prevent further tragedies on Nigerian roads.
