AWKA, Nigeria – The management of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) has dismissed five staff members, including two professors, over allegations ranging from sexual misconduct to ethical violations, as the institution intensifies efforts to enforce accountability and protect its reputation.
The decision, announced after the university’s 122nd Governing Council meeting held on Friday, affects senior academic and administrative personnel across multiple faculties.
In a statement issued on Monday, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Harrison Madubueze, said the dismissals reflect the institution’s commitment to discipline and integrity.
“At its 122nd meeting on Friday, the Eighth Governing Council of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University dismissed five staff members,” the statement said.
Those affected include Prof. C.C. Nwabachili, the immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Law, and Prof. Chike Osegbue of the Department of Political Science.
The university also dismissed Dr I.H. Iheukwumere and Mr Emeka Nwabunnia of the Department of Microbiology, Uli Campus, over allegations of sexual abuse, harassment, intimidation and extortion.
“Dr I.H. Iheukwumere and Mr. Emeka Nwabunnia were dismissed over sexual abuse, harassment, intimidation, extortion and other ethical misconduct,” the statement added.
Also affected is Mrs. Ifeoma Kakulu, a Principal Assistant Registrar and former Examination Officer in the Faculty of Law.
The COOU staff dismissal comes amid growing scrutiny of governance standards in Nigerian universities, where institutions have faced increasing pressure to strengthen accountability mechanisms and safeguard students and staff.
“Council reaffirmed its stance on discipline and integrity, warning that actions tarnishing the university’s reputation would face severe consequences,” the statement said.
The university said it remains committed to creating “a safe, accountable and forward-thinking atmosphere” aligned with its vision of becoming a university of the future.
