LAGOS, Nigeria – The Federal Government has commissioned upgraded electricity transmission facilities in Lagos, adding 208 megawatts (MW) of bulk power capacity to strengthen electricity supply for businesses and residents across key commercial districts.
Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, inaugurated the projects at the Apapa and Ijora transmission substations on Monday, describing the investments as critical to improving Nigeria’s power infrastructure and supporting economic growth.
At the Apapa 132/33kV Gas Insulated Substation, two newly installed 60MVA transformers and associated equipment increased transmission capacity by about 96MW.
Tegbe described Apapa as one of Nigeria’s most strategic economic hubs, noting that the area hosts major ports, logistics companies, manufacturing plants and warehouses that require reliable electricity.
“Apapa is not an ordinary electricity load centre. It is one of the commanding heights of the Nigerian economy,” the minister said.
At the Ijora Transmission Substation, two new 100MVA transformers increased installed capacity from 90MVA to 230MVA, delivering an additional 112MW of bulk electricity.
According to the minister, the upgrade will improve power supply to Ijora, Costain, Oyingbo, Customs and neighbouring communities within the Eko Electricity Distribution Company network.
Tegbe said the projects would ease growing capacity constraints driven by rapid urbanisation, industrial expansion and rising electricity demand while improving the stability of the national transmission grid.
Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Sule Abdulaziz, said the additional capacity would enable the company to deliver more electricity to distribution companies and better meet consumers’ needs.
The Apapa transmission project was funded through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under its Official Development Assistance programme.
JICA Chief Representative, Ishigame Keiji, said the project reflects the longstanding partnership between Japan and Nigeria aimed at strengthening the country’s electricity infrastructure.
