ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government will on 2 June hand over Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment donated by the Japanese Government to 15 federal and state colleges of education as part of efforts to strengthen teacher training and improve girls’ access to quality education.
The Ministry of Education announced the development in a statement issued on Friday, describing the initiative as a major investment in Nigeria’s education sector and a boost for digital learning across teacher-training institutions.
The intervention is being implemented under “The Project for Capacity-building of Teachers to Promote Continuous and Inclusive Access to Safe and Quality Education for Girls in West Africa,” funded by the Government of Japan through UNESCO’s International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (UNESCO-IICBA).
According to the ministry, the project targets six West African countries and seeks to address low educational attainment, teacher shortages, gender inequality and the growing number of out-of-school children through gender-responsive and conflict-sensitive education strategies.
The equipment package includes 65 laptops with carrying cases, 71 tablets, desktop computers, interactive smart boards, projectors, printers and backup hard drives. FG Hands Japanese ICT Equipment to 15 Colleges
Beneficiary institutions include Federal Colleges of Education in Kontagora, Zaria, Gombe, Yola, Asaba, Oyo and Umunze, alongside several state-owned colleges.
“The handover ceremony represents more than the distribution of digital tools; it symbolises a strategic investment in Nigeria’s education system and a shared commitment to building a future driven by qualified teachers and inclusive learning opportunities, especially for girls,” the ministry stated.
The government said the intervention will improve teacher quality, expand ICT integration in classrooms and promote safer and more inclusive learning environments for girls across participating institutions.
The Ministry of Education commended the Government of Japan, UNESCO-IICBA and the African Union for supporting the initiative.
