ABUJA, Nigeria – The Defence Headquarters deploys special forces and aerial surveillance assets to Oyo State following recent kidnapping incidents across the state.
Director of Defence Media Operations, Michael Onoja, on Tuesday says Chief of Defence Staff Olufemi Oluyede orders comprehensive security reinforcement in affected areas.
“The Defence Headquarters explicitly acknowledges the recent kidnapping incident reported within Oyo State,” Onoja says during a briefing on military operations for May.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria view any threat to civilian peace as an intolerable affront to national sovereignty.”
According to him, the military deploys advanced aerial surveillance platforms and specialised ground troops in collaboration with state authorities.
Onoja says ongoing operations are already yielding valuable intelligence and troops will maintain pressure until perpetrators are captured and security restored.
The Defence Headquarters also releases operational figures showing troops arrest 314 suspects, kill 118 terrorists and rescue 221 kidnapped civilians nationwide in May 2026.
The military further confirms that 18 terrorists surrender within the period, while troops recover 93 arms and dismantle three illegal refining sites.
Oluyede commends troops for their “gallantry, tactical ingenuity and professionalism” and urges Nigerians to continue supporting security agencies with credible intelligence.
The deployment follows the abduction of 39 students and seven teachers in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, during which teacher Adegboye Adesiyan is killed and another teacher, Michael Oyedokun, reportedly beheaded in captivity.
The military later identifies the attackers as JAS terrorists displaced from the North-East.
