BORNO, Nigeria – The Borno State Government temporarily closes and relocates Government Day Secondary School, Mussa, after suspected insurgents abduct 42 students in Askira/Uba Local Government Area.
Spokesperson to Governor Babagana Zulum, Dauda Illiya, on Tuesday says the relocation forms part of emergency measures under the Safe Schools Initiative.
Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Lawan Wakilbe, announces the decision during a visit to the affected community.
“As part of immediate safety measures under the Safe Schools Initiative, the commissioner directed the temporary closure of Government Day Secondary School, Mussa,” Illiya states.
The government relocates affected students to Government Secondary School to continue learning in safer conditions.
The delegation also visits the Emir of Uba, Ali Ibn Ismaila Mamza II, and later meets military officers, parents and community leaders in Mussa.
Wakilbe assures parents that intensified rescue efforts remain ongoing to secure the safe return of the abducted students.
Speaking for the parents, Ishaku Jidaye, commends the state government’s response but appeals for stronger efforts to free the victims.
The delegation further assesses security conditions in Dille and Lassa communities and orders full implementation of Safe Schools Initiative measures in affected schools.
The abduction occurred on May 16 after suspected Boko Haram insurgents attack Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School.
Senator Ali Ndume says the victims include pupils, secondary school students and children abducted from nearby homes.
