ZAMFARA, Nigeria – Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has launched the State Nutrition 774 Initiative and inaugurated the Zamfara State Council on Nutrition, describing malnutrition as both a public health emergency and an economic barrier to human development.
Speaking during the launch at the Government House Council Chamber in Gusau, Governor Lawal said the initiative aims to strengthen local nutrition systems and promote children’s health across the state’s 14 local government areas.
“We cannot build a prosperous Zamfara on a foundation of poor nutrition,” he declared. “Investing in a child’s first 1,000 days is the most important investment in our future.”
According to Bala Idris, the Governor’s spokesperson in a statement on Tuesday, the Nutrition 774 Initiative—a national, community-based programme—connects health, agriculture, education, social protection, and WASH sectors to improve nutritional outcomes nationwide.
Governor Lawal said the newly formed State Council on Nutrition will oversee the coordination of all nutrition policies and activities, ensuring sustainability and accountability.
“This launch is a call to action,” the governor added. “We are fully committed to empowering women, reducing child malnutrition, and supporting our local councils.”
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Health, Mrs Uju Rochas Anwukah, commended Zamfara’s leadership, saying the N774 Initiative will help build “a healthier, well-nourished Nigeria through strengthened local systems.”
The initiative marks another milestone in Zamfara’s broader Rescue Agenda, focusing on food security, maternal health, and human capital development.
