ABUJA, Nigeria – Suspects linked to the deadly Yelwata attacks in Benue State will be arraigned on Monday before the Federal High Court in Abuja, Nigerian authorities say.
In a statement issued Sunday, the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation confirms that those arrested in connection with the killings will appear before Justice Joyce Abdul-Malik, following what it describes as a “painstaking investigation”.
“The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to protecting lives and property as enshrined in the Constitution,” says Kamarudeen Ogundele, Special Adviser to the Attorney General.
Gunmen attack Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area in June, killing scores of residents and forcing hundreds to flee. Security agencies later confirm multiple arrests.
“How come no arrest has been made?” the president asks at a stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi. “I expect the arrest of those criminals.”
The killings reignite calls for structural security reforms. Governor Hyacinth Alia renews demands for state police and an intervention fund for affected communities.
“Community policing is critical to ending the recurring violence,” Alia says, describing Benue as a food-producing state under siege.
