YOLA, Nigeria – The Yola Electricity Distribution Company warns it may withdraw services from communities where its staff face violent attacks, citing growing safety concerns.
In a statement on Monday, Yola Electricity Distribution Company condemned assaults on its workers in Yagai and Kasuwan Bera areas of Jalingo, Taraba State.
Communications Officer Blessing Tunoh describes the incidents as unacceptable, saying employees were attacked while carrying out routine duties.
“The personnel were engaged in metering, fault repairs, revenue collection and prepaid system checks,” Tunoh says. “Such attacks will not be tolerated.”
YEDC says the rising hostility endangers staff and threatens reliable electricity supply, warning that vital infrastructure could also be damaged.
The company reminds residents that assaulting electricity workers is a criminal offence under Section 220(1) of the Electricity Act 2023.
“Service complaints and billing issues should be reported through official channels,” Tunoh says, urging communities to avoid confrontation.
YEDC warns that continued threats could force it to suspend operations in affected areas to protect its workforce, while pledging to engage community leaders and security agencies to restore calm.
