Wike Orders Intensified Abuja Security as Crime Threats Rise

ABUJA, Nigeria – Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has ordered sweeping security reinforcements across Abuja following a noticeable rise in criminal activities, directing agencies to tighten surveillance at all borders, highways, and strategic entry points into the capital.

Addressing operatives before deployment, FCT Commissioner of Police CP Miller Dantawaye stressed the urgency of collaboration as the festive season approaches.

“The FCT Minister, His Excellency Nyesom Wike, has given complete support, especially in terms of logistics for this operation. Funds for fueling, vehicle servicing, and allowances for officers are ready for immediate deployment,” he said.

Dantawaye highlighted concerns over the rising presence of street beggars in high-risk areas, noting that some criminal elements allegedly disguise themselves to evade detection. He said security agencies are coordinating with relevant FCTA departments to profile individuals apprehended during operations.

The renewed security push has received full approval from the Service Chiefs and the Inspector General of Police, with special focus placed on communities vulnerable to kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes.

Residents are expected to witness increased patrols, stop-and-search operations, and the strategic placement of surveillance teams across key districts of the Federal Capital Territory.

The directive followed a security briefing on Tuesday, where the FCT Police Command confirmed the activation of “Operation Sweep”, a multi-agency taskforce involving the military, police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security outfits.
