FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike
ABUJA, Nigeria – FCT Minister Nyesom Wike warns striking civil servants to obey a National Industrial Court order suspending their strike, cautioning that continued defiance could result in contempt proceedings.
Wike issued the warning on Thursday in Abuja during the handover of new ambulances to FCT hospitals, following the Joint Union Action Committee’s directive to resume a strike that began on 19 January.
The court had ruled on 27 January, ordering an immediate suspension of the industrial action and fixing 23 March for further hearing, despite the unions filing an appeal.
“It’s unfortunate when people say they will not obey court orders. That means we are a lawless society,” Wike says.
He clarifies that filing an appeal does not automatically halt enforcement of a subsisting court order.
“The mere fact that you file a notice of appeal does not mean there is a stay of execution,” he adds.
Wike warns that the administration is prepared to initiate contempt proceedings against individuals obstructing government operations.
He also accuses some union leaders of politicising the dispute.
“When you leave dialogue and begin to join us as politicians, we will treat you as political opponents,” he says.
The minister maintains that the government has already addressed most of the workers’ demands and remains open to resolving outstanding issues through dialogue.
He highlights reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, including the establishment of the FCT Civil Service Commission and expanded career progression for FCTA staff.
