WHO-DG, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
ABUJA, Nigeria – The World Health Organization has extended negotiations on a key pathogen-sharing framework under its proposed pandemic agreement, as countries work to strengthen global preparedness for future health crises.
The decision was reached in Geneva during talks of the Intergovernmental Working Group, with outcomes to be presented at the upcoming World Health Assembly.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said progress had been made but warned that urgency remains critical.
“The next pandemic is a matter of when, not if,” he said, stressing the importance of finalising the Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing system.
The framework aims to ensure rapid sharing of pathogen data while guaranteeing equitable access to vaccines, diagnostics and treatments.
Negotiators acknowledged the complexity of the agreement but expressed confidence that consensus could be reached with extended discussions.
IGWG co-chair Matthew Harpur said member states remain committed to resolving outstanding issues.
Further negotiations are scheduled for July 2026, as countries push to complete the agreement and strengthen global health security.
