ABUJA, Nigeria – The World Health Organisation warns of a global chikungunya resurgence, with more than 445,000 suspected and confirmed cases and 155 deaths recorded in 2025.
The mosquito-borne disease, which causes fever and severe joint pain, has surged across 40 countries, including Brazil, France, Kenya, and China.
“Transmission is intensifying in some regions, while declining in others,” the WHO report says, adding that travel and climate change fuel spread to new zones.
Brazil accounts for 96% of infections in the Americas, while La Réunion’s outbreak marks its first since 2014. Europe has also recorded locally transmitted cases in France and Italy.
In Africa, Mauritius and Kenya report hundreds of cases. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control confirms no local infections but warns that floods could trigger outbreaks.
Experts urge countries to strengthen vector control, surveillance, and diagnostics. “Changing climate patterns and urbanisation are expanding mosquito habitats,” WHO cautioned.
