ABUJA, Nigeria – A global health training initiative has been launched to strengthen the capacity of healthcare workers to deliver safe, rights-based abortion care.
The programme, developed by the Human Reproduction Programme (HRP) and backed by the World Health Organization, introduces a structured learning pathway covering all aspects of comprehensive abortion care.
Designed as a four-part course, the training focuses on medical abortion, surgical procedures, post-abortion care, and human rights integration.
According to HRP medical officer Antonella Lavelanet, the programme aims to improve clinical decision-making and ensure consistent, high-quality care.
“Each course strengthens everyday clinical judgement—from assessing eligibility to recognising complications and ensuring appropriate follow-up,” she said.
The initiative also emphasises patient rights, including informed consent, privacy, and non-discrimination, aligning practice with global standards.
Health experts say the programme could improve service delivery and reduce complications by equipping providers with evidence-based tools and practical training.
