Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, WAEC, Amos Dangut
ABUJA, Nigeria – The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Amos Dangut as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer for a five-year term beginning in October 2026.
Dangut, who previously headed WAEC’s Nigerian National Office, succeeds Pateh Bah of The Gambia and will serve from October 2026 to September 2031.
The appointment was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by Damianus Ojijeogu, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC Headquarters in Accra. The appointment followed ratification by the International Governing Board at its 74th annual meeting in Accra in March 2026.
Ojijeogu said Dangut’s experience in examination administration, security and digital transformation would support his new responsibilities at the regional examination body.
Dangut joined WAEC in 1998 after beginning his career as an examiner at St Louis College, Jos, in 1994. He subsequently held several positions, including assistant registrar, senior assistant registrar, deputy registrar and controller at the council’s headquarters and branch offices.
He became head of WAEC’s Nigerian National Office on October 2, 2023. During his tenure, WAEC Nigeria introduced computer-based WASSCE, serialisation of question papers and a digital electronic marking system.
The Nigerian office also expanded its digital infrastructure through the certificate portal, WAEC e-study platform and digital records archive, alongside systems for logistics, timetable management and monitoring examiner attendance.
Dangut has also served on the boards of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board and Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
He is a fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria and a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management. He has also represented the council in education policy forums and served as regional representative of the West African Sub-region on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa.
His appointment places him at the helm of WAEC as the council continues to expand digital examination systems and strengthen assessment administration across its member countries.
