LAGOS, Nigeria – The United States Embassy in Nigeria has reassured citizens that visa and passport services will continue despite the partial shutdown of the US government.
In a notice posted Wednesday on its official X account, the embassy said scheduled visa and passport processing “will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits.”
However, embassy officials cautioned that social media updates would be limited to urgent security information.
The shutdown follows a budget deadlock in Washington, the first since the record 35-day closure nearly seven years ago. While essential services remain active, about 750,000 federal workers could be furloughed until lawmakers reach a deal.
The embassy’s clarification comes as students, business travellers, and families in Nigeria feared disruptions to travel plans. “I was worried my US visa interview would be cancelled, but this announcement gives me relief,” said student Chika Okonkwo.
Analysts warn that prolonged shutdowns could eventually strain overseas processing. “If the crisis drags on, delays are inevitable,” said Lagos-based travel consultant Femi Adebayo.
The embassy advised Nigerians to monitor travel.state.gov for updates.
