ABUJA, Nigeria – UNICEF condemns the violent attack on a Government Girls School in Maga, Kebbi State, which leaves the Vice-Principal dead and 25 students abducted.
The agency calls the incident “a grim reminder” of the escalating risks children face in Nigeria’s conflict-burdened northwest.
In a statement issued Tuesday, UNICEF urges authorities to ensure the abducted girls are released immediately. “UNICEF further urges the swift release of the abducted children,” it says.
The agency insists that schools must remain protected civilian spaces under international humanitarian law. “Students and education facilities should be protected under international law from any form of attack,” it states. “Those responsible must be held to account.”
UNICEF highlights that Nigeria’s endorsement of the Safe Schools Declaration obligates it to implement stronger preventive measures during conflicts. The organisation says it is expanding collaboration with government bodies, civil society and communities to reinforce child-protection mechanisms.
“No child should be put at risk while pursuing an education,” the statement concludes.
