Abuja, Nigeria – The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has pledged to work with the Benue State Government to restore facilities at LGEA Primary School, Ater, Ukum Local Government Area, after a fire and explosion injured seven pupils.
UBEC Executive Secretary, Dr. Aisha Garba, expressed sympathy in a statement on Sunday, describing the incident as “deeply tragic.”
“The safety and well-being of our children remain our utmost priority. We stand in solidarity with the pupils, their families, and the entire school community,” she said.
Garba confirmed that all medical bills are being covered, with the injured receiving treatment at St. Anthony’s Hospital, Zaki-Biam. She also commended Governor Hyacinth Alia and emergency services for their swift intervention in managing the crisis.
The Commission assured parents and residents that learning activities would resume in a safe environment once repairs are completed.
“UBEC will collaborate closely with state authorities to rehabilitate damaged facilities and ensure that pupils return to school without fear,” Garba added.
Investigations into the cause of the explosion are ongoing.
