ABUJA, Nigeria – The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) says its digital portal is now stable following a brief disruption in December, assuring teachers nationwide of uninterrupted services.
Registrar Ronke Soyombo tells journalists on Thursday in Abuja that the outage, caused by technical issues with a former service provider, lasted one week before swift corrective action was taken.
“In December, we had some issues with the developer… we resolved it and switched to another developer,” she says, dismissing reports of prolonged failures as misleading and politically motivated.
Soyombo stresses that the council will not compromise efficiency, especially in revenue generation, noting that government agencies are required to remit 50 per cent of earnings.
“I would not announce an examination and have the portal down. That would be counterproductive,” she adds.
The registrar acknowledges that some teachers still struggle with access due to limited digital literacy. She says TRCN continues to provide alternative registration channels through state offices nationwide.
“We still have teachers who cannot access the portal… that is why our state offices remain open,” she explains, insisting the system has remained functional since January.
To improve inclusivity, TRCN is expanding outreach through campus help desks, mobile registration drives and sensitisation campaigns targeting rural communities with poor connectivity.
Soyombo also announces plans to launch a mobile application by April and explore offline integration to ease access.
Reaffirming regulatory standards, she says all teachers—from early childhood to tertiary level—must be registered and certified by TRCN, with the minimum qualification set at the Nigeria Certificate in Education or equivalent training.
