ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a nationwide security emergency, unveiling sweeping measures aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s overstretched security architecture amid escalating attacks across multiple states.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said the government is taking “extraordinary steps to confront an extraordinary threat,” including authorising accelerated recruitment into the Armed Forces, police, and the Department of State Services (DSS).
According to Onanuga, “the President has authorised the police to recruit an additional 20,000 officers, bringing the total number of new intakes to 50,000. He has also given approval for NYSC camps nationwide to be used as temporary training depots.”
The statement added that officers being withdrawn from VIP protection duties will undergo crash retraining programmes before deployment to security hotspots to “deliver more efficient policing services.”
“The DSS has my authority to immediately deploy all trained forest guards and recruit more personnel. There will be no more hiding places for agents of evil,” the statement quoted him as saying.
The President further urged the National Assembly to begin a constitutional review to allow states that want state police to establish them, cautioning states against operating boarding schools in remote areas without sufficient protection. He called on religious institutions in vulnerable areas to work more closely with security agencies.
