ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has approved a $1 billion reconstruction plan to modernise five of Nigeria’s major seaports, aiming to revitalise the maritime industry and strengthen the nation’s position in global trade.
The 48-month infrastructure overhaul will cover the Apapa, Tincan, Calabar, Warri, and Port Harcourt ports—facilities long affected by congestion and poor infrastructure.
According to Presidential aide, Bayo Onanuga in a statement on Saturday, reconstruction is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2026. “This is a landmark intervention that will redefine Nigeria’s maritime operations,” he said. “President Tinubu is determined to make our ports globally competitive, cut vessel turnaround time, and support economic diversification.”
Officials say the project will expand cargo capacity, attract investment, and create thousands of jobs across the logistics value chain.
The Federal Government added that the port renewal aligns with ongoing reforms to enhance ease of doing business, streamline customs procedures, and foster private-sector participation in port management.
