New INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan
LAGOS, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The appointment was confirmed in a statement issued on Thursday by Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, who disclosed that the National Council of State had approved Amupitan’s nomination.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presented Amupitan as the nominee to fill the vacant position, following Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s exit,” the statement read.
Onanuga added that the President informed the Council that Amupitan, from Kogi State in the North-Central region, is the first person from the state to be nominated for the position and is considered apolitical.
“Council members unanimously supported the nomination, with Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo describing Amupitan as a man of integrity,” he stated.
In line with constitutional requirements, President Tinubu will forward Amupitan’s name to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
Amupitan, 58, hails from Ayetoro Gbede in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State. He is a Professor of Law at the University of Jos and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, conferred in 2014.
