LAGOS, Nigeria – Police in Lagos have arrested an 18-year-old suspect for allegedly vandalising safety infrastructure on the Third Mainland Bridge, raising fresh concerns over public asset protection.
Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad apprehended the suspect, identified as Dogara John, while he was reportedly removing reflective road studs from the bridge.
Authorities said at least 20 of the devices were recovered at the scene.
“These road studs are critical for traffic safety, especially in low-visibility conditions,” the police said, noting that the installations help drivers maintain lane discipline and reduce accidents.
The Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Tijani Fatai, condemned the act, warning that vandalism of public infrastructure poses serious risks to lives.
“Destruction of public assets will not be tolerated,” he said, urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
The Third Mainland Bridge, one of Lagos’ busiest transport corridors, relies heavily on such safety features to manage high traffic volumes.
Security officials say the incident highlights growing concerns over infrastructure vandalism, which continues to undermine public safety and government investment.
Investigations are ongoing, with authorities pledging strict enforcement against offenders.
