TETFund Executive Secretary, Arc. Sonny Echono
ABUJA, Nigeria – The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has awarded N7.5 billion in grants to 174 research teams under the 2025 National Research Fund (NRF) cycle, in a move aimed at strengthening innovation, scientific advancement, and national development.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, the Fund’s Executive Secretary, Arc. Sonny Echono announced that the grants emerged from a highly competitive selection process involving concept note reviews, full proposal assessments, and oral defence sessions.
According to him, the grants, ranging between N13.7 million and N49.9 million, will support research projects across strategic sectors including health and social welfare, agriculture and food security, sustainable natural resource management, science and engineering, power and energy, blue economy, innovation and defence technology, clean energy, education and human capital development, gender equity, and security studies.
The Federal University of Technology, Minna recorded the highest number of successful applications with 18 grants. It was followed by the Federal University of Technology, Owerri with 11 grants, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria with 10 grants, and the University of Ilorin with eight grants.
Other institutions that performed strongly include Bayero University, Kano and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, which secured seven grants each.
