ABUJA, Nigeria – The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has joined the Nigerian Export Supervision Scheme (NESS) Technical Committee in a move aimed at strengthening quality assessment and compliance standards for goods exported from the country.
The agency said its inclusion in the committee would expand its role in ensuring that Nigerian-made products meet applicable quality, safety and conformity requirements before entering international markets.
In a statement published on its website on Saturday, SON described the development as recognition of its statutory responsibility to promote standards and support the quality of products manufactured in Nigeria. It said membership of the NESS Technical Committee would improve coordination between export supervision and product conformity assessment across government agencies.
According to the agency, the arrangement would also support the integration of its Export Certificate Programme, known as SONEXCAP, into the National Single Window, a platform intended to streamline trade-related government processes. SON said the move could improve confidence in Made-in-Nigeria products and support efforts to expand the country’s non-oil export sector.
The Nigerian Export Supervision Scheme was established under the Pre-shipment Inspection of Exports Act of 1996 to provide for the inspection of goods before shipment by government-appointed inspection agents. The scheme provides a framework for monitoring exports and checking compliance with relevant requirements.
SON said its participation in the technical committee would strengthen collaboration among agencies involved in export supervision and help improve the conformity assessment process. However, the practical impact of the development will depend on how the agencies coordinate inspections, implement certification requirements and address delays or inconsistencies in export documentation.
