Sokoto, Nigeria – The Sokoto State Government will begin a 10-day vaccination campaign on October 6 to immunise nearly two million children against measles, rubella, and polio.
The integrated campaign is supported by UNICEF, WHO, the European Union, and Gavi. It will cover all 23 local government areas with 1,378 vaccination teams mobilised.
Children aged nine months to 14 years will receive the measles-rubella vaccine, while those under five will be given oral polio drops.
“The goal is to protect children from deadly but preventable diseases,” said UNICEF Media Representative Salaudeen Bello, at a conference in Sokoto on Friday. “Parents must bring their children forward for immunisation.”
Teams will use health posts, schools, and door-to-door visits to reach every household. Traditional rulers and community leaders are being engaged to mobilise wider participation.
Officials assured parents that the vaccines are safe and effective, warning that measles and polio can cause life-long disability or death if left unchecked.
“This is about safeguarding the future of our children,” Bello said.
