Vice-President Kashim Shettima
ABUJA, Nigeria – Vice-President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Belém, Brazil, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), where Nigeria will push for billions in climate financing and forest protection support.
The statement announcing his departure was issued by Mr Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice-President, in Abuja on Tuesday.
COP30, scheduled for November 6–7 in the Brazilian Amazon, will be hosted by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and global partners. The conference will prioritise climate action, adaptation, forest preservation, biodiversity protection and climate justice.
Shettima is expected to address the leaders’ plenary with Nigeria’s climate action position, attend the inauguration of the Tropical Forest Forever Fund, and join a high-level roundtable on Climate and Nature, chaired by President Lula.
He will also attend a diplomatic reception for heads of delegations.
Day two of COP30 will see Shettima participate in discussions on energy transition and the review of the Paris Agreement, focusing on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and climate financing.
According to Nkwocha, the Vice-President will also engage development partners on expanding Nigeria’s participation in carbon markets — a move projected to unlock $2.5–$3 billion annually for climate mitigation and adaptation.
Following COP30, Shettima will proceed to Brasilia for a reciprocal diplomatic visit to his Brazilian counterpart, Geraldo Alckmin, before returning to Nigeria.
