ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – Vice-President Kashim Shettima arrives in Addis Ababa to represent President Bola Tinubu at the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.
The February 14–15 summit focuses on sustainable water availability and sanitation as pillars for achieving Agenda 2063, Africa’s long-term development blueprint.
Shettima is received at Bole International Airport by Ethiopian and Nigerian officials, including Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, who briefs him on Nigeria’s engagements and scheduled meetings.
In a statement on Friday, Tuggar says Nigeria records major diplomatic gains at the just-concluded AU Executive Council session, including agreement to grant Nigeria a permanent seat on the Board of the African Central Bank.
“This underscores Nigeria’s strategic role in shaping Africa’s financial architecture,” Tuggar says.
Nigeria also secures representation on the Technical Convergence Committee of the African Monetary Institute, a precursor to the African Central Bank.
On peace and security, candidates jointly endorsed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are elected to the AU Peace and Security Council, reflecting regional unity.
On the sidelines of the summit, Shettima is expected to attend high-level events and hold bilateral meetings to deepen Nigeria’s diplomatic and economic partnerships.
