ABUJA, Nigeria – The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project and Nigerian Guild of Editors call on authorities to protect journalists and end escalating insecurity across northern Nigeria.
In a statement on Sunday, at a World Press Freedom Day event in Ikeja, stakeholders warn that unchecked violence threatens democratic stability.
“Protecting journalists is central to peace and accountability,” the groups state, citing widespread killings, abductions and displacement in states including Benue and Borno.
Human rights lawyer Femi Falana condemns impunity. “When perpetrators face no consequences, violence escalates,” he says.
The groups stress that Nigeria must uphold obligations under international human rights frameworks and ensure justice for victims.
Participants pledge continued advocacy to safeguard civic space and strengthen media freedom.
