ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Senate aims to conclude deliberations on the ₦58.47 trillion 2026 budget by March 17, 2026, following an extensive review timetable.
Senate Committees will examine ministry, and agency estimates from February 2 to 13, with a public hearing on February 9. Economist Professor Wasiu Adeoye will provide technical analysis to guide lawmakers.
Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, said, “We extended the timeline by a week to ensure thorough scrutiny of all financial proposals before submission to the Senate.”
An interactive session with Finance Minister Wale Edun and Budget Minister Atiku Bagudu is scheduled for March 5. Committee reports will be submitted between February 16–23 to finalise the Appropriations Committee report.
The work plan follows a motion by Senators Adamu Aliero and Orji Uzor Kalu. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele stressed that the budget and electoral reform bills are priorities for the new legislative session.
Experts say the timetable ensures transparency and encourages public participation, with stakeholders contributing to policy and fiscal oversight.
