Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu
LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has begun disbursing ₦2.7 billion to vulnerable residents under its EKO Cares and EKO Listens social support programmes.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, announced the rollout Wednesday during the presentation of ₦460 million cheques to 1,000 new beneficiaries in Ikeja.
“This presentation is not just a ceremony; it is a celebration of compassion and shared humanity,” he said.
The governor said EKO Cares has supported over 8,100 residents so far, while EKO Listens has reached more than 8,690 households. He noted that ₦1.1 billion was distributed to 2,477 beneficiaries earlier this year, with another ₦1.6 billion now allocated to support 2,850 more residents.
He commended President Bola Tinubu for reforms aimed at strengthening economic resilience.
Special Adviser on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Dr Afolabi Tajudeen, said beneficiaries were selected from 5,000 applicants across the state.
Women make up 46% of those supported, while elderly persons and people with disabilities have also received food assistance.
The initiative aligns with the state’s T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda, officials said.
