ABUJA, Nigeria – The District Governor of Rotary International, District 9141, Mr. Anthony Woghiren, has called on mothers to become active ambassadors in Nigeria’s renewed drive to eradicate polio completely.
Speaking at a community immunisation outreach in Kuje, Abuja on Thursday, to mark the 2025 World Polio Day, Woghiren said mothers play a decisive role in ensuring that children under five receive full immunisation.
He commended the progress made so far, noting that only Afghanistan and Pakistan still record cases of wild poliovirus, while global efforts led by Rotary International have achieved 99.9 per cent success in eradication.
Woghiren reaffirmed Rotary’s goal of eliminating polio globally by 2030, recalling that Nigeria was certified free of wild poliovirus in 2020. He said the organisation continues to implement programmes that sustain Nigeria’s zero-polio status through constant surveillance and awareness creation.
He added that Rotary had intensified public sensitisation campaigns via social media, marketplaces, and community health outreaches to strengthen vaccination uptake.
“We cannot do it alone,” he said. “We appeal to kind-hearted Nigerians to support the Rotary Polio Fund, which helps procure vaccines and sustain immunisation activities.”
