Abuja, Nigeria – The Presidency has denied reports alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to travel to the United States to meet U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance.
The claim, circulated by Sahara Reporters, was dismissed as false by the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi.
“There’s a Sahara Reporters story that President Tinubu is going to the U.S. on Tuesday to see U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance. That story is not true,” Ajayi said in a statement on Monday. “If President Tinubu is going to the White House, he won’t be going to see a Vice President.”
The clarification follows remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently alleged that Nigerian Christians are being targeted for violence and warned that the U.S. could halt aid or “go in guns blazing.” President Tinubu responded that Nigeria remains a democracy with constitutional guarantees of religious freedom and ongoing engagement with faith leaders.
“The characterisation of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality,” Tinubu stated.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working with international partners to promote peace and protect religious communities.
