KATSINA, Nigeria – A pregnant woman, identified as Aisha Najamu, has died at the Turai Umaru Musa Yar’adua Maternity and Children Hospital in Katsina State after a health worker allegedly refused to accept a bank transfer for oxygen payment, insisting on cash only.
The incident occurred on Monday when the victim arrived at the facility in critical condition and urgently required oxygen support. An eyewitness told Channels Television on Friday that the cashier declined to accept a transfer or issue a receipt because hospital policy prohibits electronic payments.
The witness said a man attempted to intervene, pleading with the cashier to allow a bank transfer so that oxygen could be administered. However, the cashier reportedly insisted that the hospital’s internal regulations forbid transfers and that staff must strictly comply.
Out of sympathy, the eyewitness offered to pay an additional fee and later presented a $100 note to cover the bill, but the cashier still refused. He described the ordeal as “deeply distressing,” stating that Najamu cried for help until she died around 11:30 p.m.
Hospital officials told Channels Television that they had not received a formal complaint from the public aside from a human-rights organisation, IHRAAC. Cashier Aminu Kofar-Bai expressed condolences and said the management would visit the family and investigate any staff member found negligent.
Officials defended their cash-only policy, saying Katsina State’s Treasury Single Account rules prohibit transfers into personal accounts. They also said the hospital lacks POS machines and relies exclusively on cash.
Head of Pharmacy, Usman Salisu Wada, admitted there is a persistent shortage of oxygen, which they often purchase from Daura LGA. He added that the cashier “may have over-adhered” to policy out of fear of future accusations.
