Force PRO, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin
LAGOS, Nigeria – The Nigeria Police Force has foiled attempts to smuggle over 100 jerrycans of petrol across the Niger border in separate operations.
Force spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin in a statement on Saturday said operatives along the Illela–Sokoto Highway arrested a suspect, Yasir Adamu, transporting 80 jerrycans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). “The suspect was intercepted while attempting to move fuel into the Niger Republic,” he said.
In Katsina, police seized another 35 jerrycans abandoned by suspects who fled on sighting officers.
The force linked the surge in smuggling to high fuel costs following subsidy removal in May 2023. Petrol now sells above N900 per litre in Nigeria, creating lucrative incentives for smugglers supplying neighbouring states.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun praised the unit’s vigilance. “Our officers demonstrated professionalism in curbing this economic sabotage,” he said.
Authorities say the operations highlight determination to combat smuggling, which worsens fuel scarcity and drains Nigeria’s economy.
Hundeyin assured that efforts would intensify: “We remain committed to blocking all channels of illegal fuel diversion.”
