IGP Olatunji Disu
ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigeria Police Force has approved the dismissal and prosecution of Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman over the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old suspect in Delta State, in a case that has triggered widespread public outrage.
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu announced the decision on wednesday following a review by the Force Disciplinary Committee, which found the officer acted in “gross violation” of established firearm regulations, including Force Order 237.
The victim, Mene Ogidi, was reportedly shot on April 26 in Effurun during an operation linked to alleged possession of a firearm.
“Upon dismissal, all officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide,” the IGP said.
The recommendations have been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification.
Disu reiterated the force’s zero-tolerance stance on extrajudicial killings, stressing that no officer has the right to take a life outside the law.
The police chief also extended condolences to the victim’s family, assuring that justice would be pursued transparently to restore public confidence.
The incident has intensified scrutiny of police conduct in Nigeria, with rights groups and citizens calling for deeper reforms to address abuse of power and ensure accountability.
