JOS, Nigeria – The Plateau State Government shuts down the pharmacy unit of Zenith Life Hospital after investigators confirm that an expired intravenous fluid was administered to a patient, raising serious public health concerns.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Nicholas Baamlong, announces the enforcement action on Saturday, following a joint investigation by the Ministry of Health, the Plateau State Drugs and Medical Commodities Management Agency, the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, and NAFDAC.
Baamlong says the product involved is a Ringer’s Lactate infusion, batch number B21284, manufactured in November 2021 and expired in October 2024.
Investigators identify multiple violations, including operating without a qualified pharmacist, poor drug storage practices and other lapses that compromise patient safety.
“Patient safety and quality healthcare delivery are non-negotiable,” Baamlong says. “The pharmacy will remain sealed pending the conclusion of investigations and full regulatory compliance.”
He adds that sanctions will be applied in line with Section 54 of the Pharmacy Act 2022, warning healthcare providers to adhere strictly to professional and ethical standards.
