KATSINA, Nigeria – Troops of the Nigerian Army’s Operation FANSAN YANMA have rescued the wife of a retired military officer after a fierce confrontation with armed bandits in Katsina State, in a development highlighting ongoing efforts to combat insecurity in north-western Nigeria.
Mrs. Abubakar, wife of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar, was rescued during an intelligence-led operation in Matazu Local Government Area under Operation CLEAN SWEEP III, according to security sources.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the operation in an exclusive report posted on his official X account on Monday night.
The rescue mission was launched following the abduction of the retired general’s wife, prompting troops to intensify search-and-rescue operations across Matazu and neighbouring communities.
According to security sources quoted by Makama, troops encountered the armed group at Tunga village, where a gun battle forced the bandits to flee under heavy military pressure.
“The bandits shot her and fled when we made contact at Tunga village. We have rescued Mrs Abubakar. She is bleeding. We have given her first aid and are moving her for urgent medical attention,” a military source said.
Officials said the victim sustained gunshot injuries during the encounter and was immediately administered first aid before being evacuated for specialised treatment.
The rescue marks another operation under Operation CLEAN SWEEP III, a military campaign aimed at dismantling criminal networks and restoring security in areas affected by banditry across north-western Nigeria.
Katsina State has remained one of the regions hardest hit by kidnapping and bandit attacks in recent years, with security agencies intensifying operations to rescue victims and neutralise armed groups.
Military authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident, while efforts continue to track down the fleeing suspects.
