AKURE, Nigeria – The Ondo State High Court has sentenced a commercial motorcyclist, Segun Olorunfemi, to death by hanging for the brutal murder of his passenger, a 34-year-old man identified as Emmanuel Adebayo.
The court, presided over by Justice Funmilayo Adegbie, found Olorunfemi guilty of intentionally killing Adebayo during a robbery along Oda Road, Akure, in March 2022.
According to the prosecution led by State Counsel, Mrs. Kemi Ogundana, the convict lured the deceased onto his motorcycle, diverted him into a bush path, and struck him repeatedly with an iron rod before making away with his phone and ₦27,000 cash.
Ogundana said the crime violated Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.
During the trial, witnesses, including police investigators, presented forensic evidence linking Olorunfemi to the murder weapon and stolen items recovered from his residence.
Delivering judgment, Justice Adegbie held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt, describing the act as “gruesome and premeditated.”
“The court finds the defendant guilty as charged and hereby sentences him to death by hanging until he is dead,”
