OGUN, Nigeria – The Ogun State Government strengthens collaboration with health stakeholders to implement guidelines regulating safe pregnancy termination under legally recognised conditions.
Speaking in Abeokuta on Thursday, the Primary Healthcare Development Board confirms the policy aligns with national standards and focuses on preventing avoidable maternal deaths.
The initiative, officials say, reflects the commitment of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration to women’s reproductive health.
Executive Secretary Elijah Ogunsola explains that the guideline does not legalise abortion but standardises care in cases such as rape, incest, cancer and severe hypertension. “In circumstances where pregnancy threatens life or health, access to safe medical care becomes essential,” he says.
The Centre for Bridging Health Gaps describes unsafe termination as one of Nigeria’s most preventable causes of maternal death, often driven by stigma and silence.
Medical professionals at the event stress that procedures must be conducted by qualified personnel under hygienic conditions.
