ABEOKUTA, Nigeria – The Ogun State Government has urged residents to make greater use of its emergency ambulance services as it expands access to life-saving medical response across urban, rural and riverine communities.
The appeal was made on Wednesday during activities marking the 2026 World Ambulance and Paramedics Day in Abeokuta.
Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker, described paramedics and ambulance personnel as frontline lifesavers whose dedication continues to improve emergency healthcare delivery across the state.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Kayode Oladehinde, she said the annual event recognises emergency responders who provide timely medical assistance during critical situations.
Coker said Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration has significantly strengthened emergency medical services by expanding the state’s ambulance fleet from four to 30 ambulances, now strategically deployed across all 20 local government areas.
“Our investment in emergency medical services has greatly improved access to urgent healthcare. We encourage residents to promptly call our emergency response line whenever medical emergencies occur,” she said.
She disclosed that the government has also deployed 80 tricycle ambulances to improve emergency response in rural communities, alongside two boat ambulances serving riverine areas in Ipokia and Ogun Waterside Local Government Areas.
According to her, the state operates a 24-hour emergency call centre through 08112000033, enabling residents to quickly access emergency medical assistance.
Coker explained that the awareness walk was organised to educate residents on the importance of early emergency response and appropriate use of ambulance services.
Earlier, Deputy Director of Ogun State Ambulance and Emergency Services, Festus Adetonwa, encouraged residents to utilise the emergency response system whenever urgent medical attention is required.
