ABEOKUTA, Nigeria – Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed that he has lived with diabetes for more than 40 years, attributing his continued strength at age 89 to healthy living, regular exercise and consistent medical care.
Obasanjo made the disclosure on Saturday after performing the ceremonial tee-off at the 2026 First Bank/OBJ Golf Tournament held at the Abeokuta Golf Club in Ogun State.
The elder statesman said discipline in diet, exercise, rest and medical check-ups had played a major role in sustaining his health despite his long battle with diabetes.
“I’m officially 89 years old, but by the grace of God I have been keeping fit and strong despite the fact that I have been diabetic for over 40 years,” Obasanjo said.
“One thing you must understand is that exercise is very important at every age — and even more important when you become a senior citizen.”
The former president explained his personal wellness principle using the acronym “DREAMS + C”.
According to him, “D” represents diet, “R” stands for rest, “E” means exercise, while “M” refers to medical check-ups and necessary medication.
Obasanjo added that “S” symbolises social interaction and “C” stands for contentment.
“Whatever position you are in life, be content. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be ambitious, but avoid over-ambition,” he said.
He also praised First Bank of Nigeria for supporting the golf tournament for eight consecutive years.
Chief Executive Officer of FirstBank Group, Olusegun Alebiosu, described the competition as a platform promoting discipline, integrity and excellence.
Meanwhile, Vice Chairman of Abeokuta Golf Club, Oladele Adeniran, urged Nigerians to embrace golf, dismissing claims that the sport is reserved for elites.
He said many successful professional golfers began as caddies from humble backgrounds.
