JOS, Nigeria – The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) announces a landmark policy shift with the introduction of a formalised protocol to support corps members with disabilities, marking a major step toward inclusion, dignity and equal opportunity in Nigeria’s mandatory national service scheme.
NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, unveils the initiative on Wednesday at the 2026 pre-orientation workshop in Jos, saying the reform reflects the agency’s resolve to modernise its operations and respond to evolving national and social realities.
According to Nafiu, the protocol is designed to ensure that graduates with physical, sensory and other disabilities receive structured support before, during and throughout their service year, removing long-standing barriers to participation.
“The NYSC must continue to evolve into a humane, progressive and nationally responsive institution that guarantees dignity, inclusion and equal opportunity for every corps member,” Nafiu says.
He describes the three-week orientation camp as the foundation of the entire service year, stressing its critical role in shaping values, discipline and national identity.
“Orientation camp is the bedrock of the NYSC experience. It is where service begins, character is forged and citizenship is affirmed,” he adds.
