CALABAR, Nigeria – The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Cross River State commends the state government for arresting and prosecuting 10 individuals accused of practising traditional medicine illegally.
Chairman of the NMA in Calabar, Dr Ezoke Epoke, on Monday praised the administration of Governor Bassey Otu for acting against unregulated health practices following reports from a trade fair in Calabar Municipality.
According to Epoke, suspects allegedly conduct medical consultations and sell herbal products without approval from regulatory authorities. “This action demonstrates government commitment to safeguarding public health,” he says.
The association warns that unregulated practitioners pose serious health risks, including the sale of contaminated or adulterated products lacking NAFDAC certification, false medical claims and misrepresentation of professional qualifications.
Epoke acknowledges the collaboration of the state health ministry, law enforcement agencies and the anti-quackery task force, calling for continuous monitoring of traditional medicine practices across Cross River State.
