ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria’s weather authority issued a three-day advisory warning of hazy conditions, suspended dust particles and isolated thunderstorms across several parts of the country, raising health and safety concerns.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) says dry weather will dominate most regions from Tuesday to Thursday, with sunshine prevailing in the North and parts of the North-Central zone. However, NiMet cautions that dust haze will linger in the atmosphere, potentially affecting visibility and respiratory health.
In its forecast released from Abuja, the agency notes that the North-Central region may experience increasing cloud cover later on Wednesday and Thursday. Isolated thunderstorms are expected in parts of southern Kogi, Benue and Kwara states during evening hours.
Southern Nigeria is forecast to see a mix of sunshine and cloudiness, with thunderstorms and light rainfall likely in several states, particularly in the afternoons and evenings. Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Imo, Abia and Anambra are listed among areas at risk.
“Suspended dust particles remain present in the air,” NiMet warns, advising people with asthma and other respiratory conditions to limit outdoor exposure and take preventive measures.
The agency urges motorists to exercise caution during rainfall due to reduced visibility and slippery roads. Airline operators are also advised to obtain airport-specific weather briefings before flight operations.
NiMet encourages residents to follow updates through official channels as conditions evolve.
