ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria is set to experience predominantly hazy and sunny conditions over the next three days, with health risks looming for residents suffering from respiratory ailments, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) warns.
In a weather outlook issued from its Abuja headquarters on Tuesday, NiMet says dust haze will blanket northern and North-Central regions from Wednesday to Friday, while southern states may record isolated thunderstorms and light rainfall.
According to the forecast, northern areas will experience sunny but hazy skies throughout the period, with dust concentration expected to intensify during the afternoon and evening hours on Friday.
Central states are projected to experience similar conditions, as atmospheric dust particles remain suspended in the air.
“Dust particles are in suspension over the North-Central region,” NiMet states, urging vulnerable individuals to take precautionary measures.
The agency specifically advises people living with asthma and other respiratory disorders to remain alert and limit exposure to dusty conditions.
In contrast, southern Nigeria is expected to enjoy relatively clearer skies, broken by cloud formations and occasional thunderstorms.
On Wednesday afternoon, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall are forecast over Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.
Thursday’s outlook predicts morning thunderstorms in Ogun, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River, with afternoon storms extending to Ondo, Imo and Delta.
By Friday, cloudy conditions are expected in the morning, followed by thunderstorms over Anambra, Imo, Abia, Edo, Bayelsa, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Rivers during the day.
NiMet notes that the weather pattern reflects typical harmattan season conditions, which affect Nigeria and other West African countries annually between November and March.
