ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate International Workers’ Day, recognising the contributions of Nigerian workers to national development.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who praised workers for their dedication and resilience.
In a statement issued by Permanent Secretary Magdalene Ajani, the minister emphasised that workers remain central to Nigeria’s growth and prosperity.
He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare, enhancing security, and creating an enabling environment for economic progress.
Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on unity, productivity and national development, while calling for continued patriotism and commitment to duty.
Labour analysts say Workers’ Day remains a key moment for assessing labour conditions and government policies affecting employment and welfare across the country.
