Education Minister, Dr. Tunji Alausa
ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria has launched a nationwide transparency and data accountability system requiring all publicly funded universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education to publish audited accounts and performance reports annually, beginning in the first quarter of next year.
Education Minister, Dr. Tunji Alausa announced the new policy on Tuesday while unveiling the Federal Tertiary Institution Governance and Transparency Platform (FTIGTP) in Abuja.
The digital platform is designed to streamline financial reporting, strengthen oversight, and ensure real-time access to key data across the higher education sector.
Dr. Alausa said compliance will now determine institutions’ eligibility to receive funding from government sources such as the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
“No institution will continue to benefit from public funding without demonstrating transparency and responsible financial stewardship,” the minister said. “This marks a decisive shift to performance-driven governance.”
The platform will consolidate student enrolment statistics, government allocations, TETFund and NELFund disbursements, research grants, and financial audits. Authorities say it will improve accountability and make it easier to track how education resources are used.
Professor Tanko Ishaya, Chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, welcomed the move as “a timely and necessary step aligning Nigeria’s institutions with global administrative standards.”
