ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued fresh safety warnings as thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are forecast to sweep across Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday.
According to NiMet’s three-day weather outlook, released on Sunday in Abuja, isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains will affect Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba states on Monday morning. By afternoon, heavier downpours are expected in northern states, with flash floods possible in Adamawa, Taraba, and Gombe.
The central region, including the Federal Capital Territory, will experience cloudy skies with sunshine intervals in the morning, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rains later in the day. Southern states such as Ekiti, Ondo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River are also forecast to see moderate rains, intensifying by evening.
On Tuesday, Borno, Kaduna, Taraba, Adamawa, and Gombe will experience thunderstorms, while Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Katsina, and Zamfara are expected to follow later. Central states including Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and the FCT remain on alert for heavy rains.
By Wednesday, isolated thunderstorms are predicted in Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Borno, and Adamawa. Benue, Kwara, Niger, and Kogi will also face persistent rainfall.
NiMet urged motorists to avoid driving in heavy rainfall and advised farmers against applying fertilisers or pesticides before storms.
The agency stressed the need to “unplug electrical appliances and avoid tall trees during thunderstorms” to reduce risks.
Airline operators have also been advised to obtain airport-specific forecasts to ensure safe operations.
